From April 28th to 30th, 2008 Sustainable Development and Green Olympics——The Third UN-NGO-IRENE/Asia-Pacific Conference organized by China NGO Network for International Exchanges (Hereinafter referred to as CNIE) and Beijing NGO Association for International Exchanges (Hereinafter referred to as Beijing NGO) was successfully held in Beijing. 48 delegates from the institutions like the UN ECOSOC, UNDPI, Pacific-Asia Region, overseas NGOs of 24 countries from Pacific-Asia region and other areas of the world as well as over 120 delegates from more than 50 NGOs in China attended the event. Under the direct leadership of Huang Chengxiang, Li Zhao and Pan Yousheng and with the extensive support of Beijing NGO’s members, the event was organized attentively in close collaboration with CNIE and the cordial service of Beijing NGO to make sure the event a great success. Our work was recognized and complimented by related organizations like CNIE and NGOs involved in this event, and foreign guests present. In particular, 32 unit members of Beijing NGO considered it a supreme chance to exchange views with international NGOs and to present Beijing and the Olympics. It helped the NGOs in Beijing go international and played an active role in contacting with the world.
On April 28, the opening ceremony of the symposium and seminars on different topics were held, hosted by Cui Jianjun, Vice President and Secretary General of CNIE. At the opening ceremony, Cheng Siwei, former Vice Chairman of NPC, Zhang Zhijun, Vice Minister of International Liaison Department of the Central Committee of the CPC and President of CNIE, Tu Mingde, Vice Chairman of COC and Assistant to Chairman of BOCOG, Huang Chengxiang, President of our Beijing NGO and Dr. Seith, Director of Coordination Department of UN ECOSOC delivered speeches. Mr. Sha Zukang, Deputy Secretary General of UN addressed his greetings in the video. Yu Xiaoxuan, Deputy Director of Engineering and Environment Division of BOCOG, delivered a keynote speech on the topic of Green Olympics. The conference focused on three sub-topics :NGOs and Green Olympics, NGOs and Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development and Green Olympics. A proposal to the UN ECOSCO high-level meeting was passed in the conference. A photo exhibition themed on Sustainable Development and Green Olympics-The Chinese NGOs are in Action” was also held outside of the conference venue. The attendees fully recognized efforts made by the Chinese Government in support of the millennium goal of sustainable development brought out by UN and their achievement, especially speaking highly of the Green Olympics carried out by Beijing government and voicing their support to Beijing Olympics.
In the morning of April 29, the conference was closed in the Great Wall, and the Chinese Olympic champion Yang Yang delivered a statement under the title of Expecting Olympics and Appealing for Harmony. Afterwards, all the delegates took part in the signature collection in favor of Sustainable Development and Green Olympics and the tree planting activity standing for Green Olympics and friendship on the Great Wall. In the afternoon, our association arranged a visit to Qinghe Sewage Treatment Plant and the main venues for Olympic Games including Water Cube, Bird’s Nest etc., giving delegates a first impression of Green Olympics. On behalf of Beijing Municipal Government, Jilin, the Executive Vice Mayor of Province feted the delegates in the evening.
In the morning of April 30, Beijing NGO arranged the foreign guests to participate in the Olympic 100 day countdown commemoration organized by Shichahai community of the Xicheng District, experiencing their passion for Olympic Games.
This conference was an important event co-organized by Beijing NGO since its establishment and it was the first time for our association to be directly involved in organizing the international NGO conference and exchange with the foreign NGOs. It publicized Beijing’s dedication to 2008 Olympic Games in positive ways, demonstrating the concept and spirit of Chinese government and Chinese people in holding Olympics, answered?the?concern?of the criticism for the Beijing Olympics made by several foreign NGOs and won more advocacy and support from international NGOs. Meanwhile it reinforced the exchanges between Chinese NGOs and the NGOs in Asia-Pacific regions and the related organizations of UN, functioning as a bridge and link for external exchanges.
