Founded in 1996, Global Village of Beijing Environmental Education Center is a private non-enterprise unit registered with the Civil Affairs Bureau of Yanqing County, Beijing. The goal of Global Village of Beijing is to promote the construction of ecological civilization in China by initiating green living, building green community and cultivating green media. Sheri Liao, director and legal person of the Global Village of Beijing, is used to be a scholar in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. In 2000, Sheri Liao was awarded the Sophie Prize, an international award known as Europe's Alternative Nobel Prize and was appointed as the environmental consultant of Beijing's Olympic Organizing Committee. A year later, she was granted the title of 'Green Civilization Ambassador' by NPC Environmental and Resources Protection Committee and State Environmental Protection Administration, and won the International Banksia Award in Australia, the country's most prestigious environmental award. She also was the first woman to be voted as 'Woman of the Year' by Woman of China which represented her influence both at home and abroad. Yu Xinbin, office director of the Global Village of Beijing, was the recommended representative of all members.
