Beijing Children’s Legal Aid and Research Center, founded in 1999, is the first non-profit legal agency specialized in legal aid and research on juveniles in China. In May, 2003, the Center officially obtained people-run non-enterprise registration. The purpose of the Center is committed to the protection of the legal rights and interests of juveniles in China, the participation of the protection work of those juveniles by lawyers, building up an collaborative juvenile protection network covering all juveniles in China, and accelerating the research process of laws on juveniles and the improvement of relevant legal regulations. The Center has established a comprehensive juvenile protecting model on aspects such as providing legal services to the juveniles, researching laws on juveniles, pushing and taking part in legislation process. Meanwhile, it has pushed forward the participation of the protection work of those juveniles by more lawyers in China. Since 2001, the Center has provided over 27 thousand free legal consultations to the society, has directly handled more than 400 legal aid cases, has coordinated and supported voluntary lawyers around China to directly handle over 500 legal aid cases, has held over 300 legal lectures, and has directly trained more than 100 thousand people.
