2023 marks the tenth anniversary of the vision of building a human community with a shared future. In a concrete effort to support the building of a community of life for humanity and nature, Beijing NGO Network for International Exchanges (Beijing NGO) joined hands with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) to hold the Earth Hour event in Beijing for the tenth consecutive year on March 25, 2023. This is also part of its effort to implement the guiding principles of the 20th CPC National Congress and General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important instructions on participating in global climate change governance, pursing green development, promoting harmony between human and nature, etc.
This year’s Earth Hour event will for the first time ever blend with the elements of the Olympic Winter Games. The National Speed Skating Oval (dubbed the “Ice Ribbon”), the only newly built indoor venue in Beijing Zone of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, will be the lights-off landmark in celebration of Earth Hour.

Switching off lights in the Ice Ribbon during Earth Hour aligns with the “Sustainability for the Future” concept of the Beijing 2022 Games, the first Games to implement the Olympic 2020 Agenda throughout the process. It is also a call to action for all sectors of society to go green and low-carbon. That the Ice Ribbon will switch off lights for an hour demonstrates to the world that Beijing, the first city in the world to host both the Olympic Summer and Winter Games, is determined to push forward green and low-carbon development and continuously improve the eco-environment.
It is the bounden duty of humanity to protect the Earth, deal with climate change, and respond to global warming. China has been active in safeguarding the planet, the shared home of humanity. Beijing NGO is a civil society organization that enjoys consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and is an observer organization of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Paying high attention to biodiversity conservation and climate change, Beijing NGO has organized civil society organizations in Beijing to attend the UN Climate Change Conference to share the practices and solutions of China and Beijing in responding to climate change and achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.
Over the past decade, Beijing NGO has partnered with WWF to celebrate Earth Hour at various modern and time-honored landmarks in Beijing, such as The Place, the Capital Museum, the Imperial College, CCTV Tower, and the Beijing Olympic Tower, to disseminate the idea of eco-friendly living and encourage more people to care for the Earth. Such efforts have also received support from the Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Management, the Foreign Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, the Beijing People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (BPAFFC), and other organizations.
At 20:30, lights will be switched off in Beijing Zhongshan Park, Beihai Park, Jingshan Park, the Summer Palace, and other municipal-level parks. Lights will be also turned off or dimmed on selected roads, bridges, buildings, public facilities, lights at the riverside, etc. The goal is to call on the public to observe Earth Hour, help protect the environment and control carbon emissions in urban lighting, and strengthen the influence of energy consumption and emissions reduction.
