Earth Hour 2022 was successfully held on March 26 with the slogan of “Shape our Future!” Unnecessary lighting and power-consuming products were switched off for one hour as a show of concern and support for ecological protection.
Lu Lunyan, chief representative of WWF Beijing Office, said in the speech that it was hoped that leaders of all countries would guide the global post-COVID recovery with the “people-oriented and ecological priority” idea, fulfill the global commitment to climate and biodiversity conservation while developing the economy, and reverse the trend of biodiversity loss by 2030.
As a representative of the co-sponsor, Dai Jianjun, vice president of Beijing NGO Network for International Exchanges, delivered a speech. He said that when people pull together, nothing is too heavy to be lifted. It is our bounden duty to protect the planet, tackle climate change, and work together to fight climate warming.
Yang Haibo, chairman of Beijing Minhe Foundation for International Exchanges, which is the co-organizer, called on the public to say no to non-degradable disposable plastic products, and do more to protect the environment.
Climate change and biodiversity loss are global challenges that require local solutions. In response to China’s call to “strive to achieve carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060”, the Earth Hour public environmental protection event actively and consistently raises public awareness and spurs public action on climate change and ecological protection.
The Earth Hour 2022 event was held at the Phoenix Center in Beijing and was livestreamed via the “Phoenix Earth Hour Zone”. The lights-off ceremony took place both online and offline, presenting an immersive stage play that “goes beyond one hour” for the public. A journey to learn about the ecological future of the earth begins with a “puzzle solving” task. It hopes to involve more people in protecting the Earth and creating a better future. Beijing Phoenix Center, Beijing Aquarium, Asia Financial Center, Lujiazui Area in Shanghai, Guangzhou International Finance Center, Tianfu Twin Towers in Chengdu, Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan, Luhuitou which is the city sculpture of Sanya city, Phoenix International Airport, Great Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi’an and many other city landmarks in China turned off unnecessary landscape lighting for one hour beginning at 20:30, leading to a climax for the event.
This Earth Hour event was jointly hosted by the Beijing Office of the WWF, Beijing NGO Network for International Exchanges, the Beijing Minhe Foundation for International Exchanges, and Shenzhen One Planet Foundation, and supported by Beijing People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Management.
Here, we call for practical action to participate in building an equitable, carbon-neutral, nature-positive future. Protecting the Planet needs more than one hour of action. It requires consistent action, which must start at this moment.
