The 49th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council was held in Geneva, Switzerland on February 28, and is scheduled to conclude on April 1. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this meeting was held both online and offline. As a hub-type social organization with Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Special Consultative Status, Beijing NGO Network for International Exchanges (Beijing NGO) organized its member units and relevant domestic institutions to send delegates to attend the meeting online, and shared views on cultural rights and other issues.
Li Yue, director of Beijing Women’s International Center, gave a keynote speech on women’s cultural rights. She said that women faced many obstacles in the enjoyment of their cultural rights due to historical and social reasons as well as the role of gender assigned by culture. Women made a historic step forward towards equal enjoyment of sports rights as a result of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Commitment to Promoting Gender Equality released by the Beijing Organising Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games contains 14 epoch-making commitments in four areas: equal participation, provision of a safe sports environment, promoting gender equality in the workplace and ensuring equal rights and interests in the workplace.
In the speech, Li Yue called on the international community to take note of the positive efforts made by the Chinese people and the Chinese government to promote the women’s equality in sports in the world during the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, and encouraged more international organizations and governments to create a more inclusive social environment for equal cultural rights for women.
Calvin Tse, chairman of Hong Kong General Chamber of Young Entrepreneurs, made a recorded speech at the online meeting. He introduced the positive influence of the Law on Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong on the young entrepreneurs in the SAR, and called on relevant countries to comprehensively and objectively learn about the achievements of the implementation of the Law in the SAR, and not to interfere in China’s internal affairs.
