The 45th regular session of the Human Rights Council was held in Geneva, Switzerland from Sept. 14 to Oct. 6, local time. Due to the epidemic, the session was held both online and offline. As an NGO in Special Consultative Status to the UN Economic and Social Council, Beijing NGO Network for International Exchanges worked with Beijing Women's Federation, a member unit, sent representatives to attend the videoconferencing in the form of recorded speeches.
The theme of this session focused on how to contribute to the social and economic recovery by promoting and protecting human rights under the influence of the coronavirus epidemic, and protect the vulnerable groups against the impact of the crisis to the greatest extent. Representatives of NGOs from China expressed their views on promoting environmental protection, upholding fairness and justice in the international order, etc. Beijing Women's Federation introduced the practice of Chinese women's organizations to improve women's economic empowerment and meet the challenges of the coronavirus epidemic.
Li Yue, Director of Beijing Women's International Center, said that women's organizations in China take practical actions to protect women's right to development, including providing micro loans to women setting up in business, helping women in rural areas develop e-commerce platforms, offering vocational skills training for women on low incomes, providing support to women's organizations in poverty-stricken areas in western China for common development, etc. She called on all countries to foster cooperation, use precious resources and force for women's survival and development, and improve women's ability to contribute to economic and social development.
