From December 6 to 10, 2019, the Beijing NGO working group headed by Xu Qiang, Secretary-General of Beijing NGO Association for International Exchanges (“Beijing NGO”), including Chen Yanping, head of the primary organization building department of the Municipal Women’s Federation; Guo Jianqiang, a first-level researcher of the staff service department of the Municipal Federation of Trade Unions; and Ling Hao, deputy director of the Municipal Staff Service Center, visited Mauritius and conducted communication with NGOs such as Mauritius Council of Social Services and Gender Empowerment Association, and hosted seminar on “NGO Capacity Building” and photo exhibition on China-Africa exchange to demonstrate the achievements of the social and economic development in Beijing and the people-to-people exchanges between China and Africa.
During the visit, the working group and Mauritius Council of Social Services held a seminar on “NGO Capacity Building”. Xu Qiang and Mr. Suraj Ray, chairman of the Mauritius Council of Social Services, exchanged views on promoting the communication between the relevant districts of Beijing and the relevant cities of Mauritius, and carrying out such events as forums on women and youth, and organizing international mountain walking. The members of the working group conducted communication and interaction with over 50 members of Mauritius Council of Social Services. The two sides viewed a photo exhibition on Beijing’s economic and social development and the achievements of people-to-people exchanges, and conducted deep, extensive communication regarding family culture value, women development, and staff skills advancement. The working group also paid a visit to the Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises of Mauritius and discussed practical measures to promote people-to-people exchanges and interaction among SMEs.
When the working group visited the Chinese Embassy in Mauritius, Ambassador Sun Gongyi said that it is highly necessary to foster people-to-people exchanges. Beijing NGO has had fruitful exchanges with Mauritius Council of Social Services over the years. Ambassador Sun hoped that greater efforts will be made to foster exchange and cooperation in cultural, sports, economic, trade, and agricultural spheres and promote the ties between the two countries and expressed willingness to support Beijing NGO to host an international mountain walking conference in Mauritius and to act as a liaison with the Ministry of Sports of Mauritius.
Background: China and Mauritius established diplomatic relations on April 15, 1972. In 1988, China established the first overseas Chinese cultural center in Mauritius. Mauritius is the only African country that designates the Spring Festival as a statutory holiday. In 2003, China designated Mauritius as a destination country for Chinese citizens’ self-financed outbound travel.
