To mark the 45th anniversary of the conclusion of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship, on October 21, a delegation of nine from Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, headed by Ms. Chieko Tsuki, president of the Odawara Calligraphy Instructors Cultivation Association, visited the Beijing Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (BAFFC) and the Beijing NGO Network for International Exchanges (Beijing NGO). The three sides jointly held the China-Japan Calligraphy Seminar.
The Japanese delegation consisted of calligraphy instructors and enthusiasts. The BAFFC invited Mr. Meng Fanxi, a famous Chinese calligrapher and calligraphy educator long admired by Japanese calligraphy enthusiasts, to attend the seminar. Via the member unit Beijing Municipal UNESCO Clubs Association, it also invited teachers and students interested in calligraphy from the Affiliated Experimental School of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, the Affiliated School of Luhe Middle School in Tongzhou, and the Affiliated Middle School of Beijing University of Technology, to the seminar.
Jiao Yutong, vice president of the BAFFC and competent leader of Beijing NGO, welcomed the delegation and introduced to them that the main tasks of the two organizations were to enhance understanding and friendship between the people of Beijing and the people outside China, strengthen exchanges and cooperation, and cement people-to-people bonds between China and foreign countries. China and Japan have a long history of cultural exchanges in the calligraphy art since ancient times and the calligraphy art is an important medium for enhancing bilateral peace and friendship. On behalf of the BAFFC and Beijing NGO, he said that he was pleased to build an exchange platform for Chinese and Japanese calligraphy enthusiasts, and hoped that they would continue to promote exchanges and sustain their friendship.
According to president Chieko Tsuyiko, the Odawara Calligraphy Instructors Cultivation Association is a non-governmental organization that coaches school teachers on calligraphy skills and provides calligraphy teaching advice, to help them teach children the art of calligraphy. For ten consecutive years, it has participated in the Japan-China Youth Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition held by the Japan-China Friendship Association in Western Kanagawa Prefecture, among other bilateral cultural exchanges. On this trip, the delegation attended the 2023 China (Anyang) International Conference of Chinese Characters, before coming to Beijing to have in-person communication with the famous Chinese calligrapher Meng Fanxi and Chinese calligraphy enthusiasts. Through this trip, they not only improved their calligraphy skills, but also had a deeper understanding of the breadth and depth of Chinese traditional culture and art.
At the seminar, Mr. Meng patiently answered the calligraphy questions raised by the Japanese guests one by one, and even made demonstrations himself. Then the Chinese and Japanese calligraphy enthusiasts wrote down the eight Chinese characters “山川异域 风月同天” (meaning “Lands apart, sky shared”) together.
The young generation holds the key to the future of friendly exchanges between China and Japan. Our languages are different, but we share the same cultural root. Through the event, the children improved their skills and made friends. Together, they wrote down the four characters of “友谊长存” (“Long live friendship”), expressing their confidence in the future of friendly exchanges between China and Japan.
